The National Center for Transgender Equality recently posted a new resource compiling information on Medicare coverage for transgender medical and transition needs.
The new resource explains that, while Medicare does not cover sex reassignment surgery, it does cover medically necessary hormone therapy and routine preventive care, regardless of the gender marker in one’s records. It also details how to navigate the appeal process if you are denied coverage. As part of our ongoing federal aging policy agenda, NCTE will continue advocating for sex reassignment surgery coverage in Medicare and ensure that transgender needs are fully addressed in all public health programs.
But what your doctor doesn’t know can hurt you. Download and share this resource with doctors and providers to make sure you are getting the coverage you need.
The full document can be read on the NCTE website.
